Free to Travel? HELL YES! CHECK, CHECK, CHECK!!!

Where in the world shall I go? As a travel buff, pondering this question has given me much pleasure over the years and I’ve always kept an ongoing mental list of places I’d like to visit or revisit, but since much of the world is currently in the throws of or doing its best to recover from the Covid19 Pandemic, global travel is rather limited at present. What to do? What to do?

What’s that I hear? It’s the BIG trees out west calling to me again, so as easy as that, a road trip is born. The Redwoods are calling and I must go and while out that way, I’ll drop down to see the Sequoias and feel what its like to be in the presence of the largest trees in the world. Go west young man and so shall I.

Mode of Travel

As a side effect of the pandemic, knowing international travel would be limited for some time, I find myself in possession of a Roadtrek Zion SRT camper van in which to roam the highways and byways of our great Country. Years ago for about 2 years, I lived and traveled North America in a Class A RV called, Dora (as in, Dora The Explorer). Today, I’d like to introduce you to Endora, my mode of travel for the aforementioned road trip.  It seems I have joined the long standing, but currently robust movement of folks in vans traveling the Country.

Traveling Sisters, together but separate

Prior to the purchase of my van, my sister had ordered a van of her own, I imagine with hopes and visions of adventure, exploration, and expanding horizons. Hers is the new Winnebego Revel and it’s cool as all get out. Take a look!

I’ll talk about how our traveling together came to be in another post, but for now know we will begin our 8 or so week journey together in just a few weeks. On July 8th, 2021, we will bid adieu to Bodhi, Stella, and the hens along with their loving and capable sitters and step out onto the Road.

Stepping out onto the Road is one of my most favorite things to do! Who knows what will happen, what we will see, who we will meet, what we will learn, and who we will become as a result?  I so look forward to the unfolding.

Route of Travel

While considering a route west, I knew I didn’t want to be on the interstates much, if at all, so I started poking around the world wide web and stumbled upon US Highway 50, which runs 3,073 miles from the coast of Maryland at Ocean City all the way to West Sacramento in California. If you’d like to read more about this highway, click here:    It feels like just the ticket.

Day 1 will find us traveling from my home in Western North Carolina over to Clarksville, TN just north and west of Nashville to stop over with long time family friends. From there on Day 2, we will move up to St. Louis where we will pick up Highway 50 and turn left.

Other than this, the only structure I have in mind is to spend about a week in Colorado on the way out, a few days on Mount Shasta, a few days with the Northern Redwoods, a few days driving the northern Pacific Coast Highway, 5 nights camping in Yosemite National Park (reservations secured), and a few days in Sequoia/Kings Canyon National Park. Other than that, I have no idea what will come or which route we’ll take. No matter what though, given the current record setting high temperatures, drought, fires, and land closures along with the record number of folks out doing what we’re going to be doing, flexibility will be key for sure.

Until next time…
